Jason Kidd is running on fumes for the Dallas Mavericks

38-year old point guard Jason Kidd is starting to run out of gas.  He played in 80 games (all starts) for the Mavericks last year and he averaged 33.2 minutes, 7.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 8.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Kidd only shot 36.1% from the floor and 34% from three point range last year and that is terrible.  Kidd has now played in 1,267 games (1,254 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 36.9 minutes, 13.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game.  As of right now, Jason Terry is his backup, despite his best position being shooting guard.  If the Mavericks don’t bring J.J. Barea back in 2011-12, they will need to bring in another point guard to back up Kidd.

The Dallas Mavericks have a lot of work to do when the lockout is lifted

The Mavericks are going to try to bring back J.J. Barea and Tyson Chandler, but it’s not going to be easy as they are two of the better free agents on the market.  Even if the Mavericks don’t bring Barea back (if he gets too expensive), they appear to be o.k. at guard.  They really need to get backup bigs and those are also not going to be cheap.  Time for Mark Cuban to ante up to try for a repeat in 2011-12.
